Community Focus Groups

The focus groups were conducted over a four month period of time. A total of 538 community members, parents, church members, business people, clergy, teachers, school administrators, city staff and students spent thousands of man hours to answer the question “How can we dramatically increase educational attainment in our community?” Of these, 200 participated in the focus groups meetings. The focus group sessions resulted in a list issues, strategies and suggested implementation steps. These ideas were summarized into the following five areas of focus:

  • Motivation
  • Communication
  • Preparation
  • Participation
  • Resources

The full-text description of each area of focus is contained in the PEP Education Strategy (396kb) document. The summarized results of each area of focus revealed a pattern of five basic approaches to implementation:

  • Marketing
  • Community Organizing
  • Programs
  • Partnerships
  • Incentives
