Maywood

About the Community

Maywood is the densest city in the State of California, home to just over 28,000 residents in just under one square mile. Mainly a residential city, it is served by local retail businesses and shopping centers with a few industrial businesses. The City of Vernon, the nation’s first incorporated city, borders Maywood in the west and north. The City is bordered on the east by the Los Angeles River, and to the south by the Cities of Bell and Huntington Park. Slauson Avenue, the main commercial corridor, which bisects the city in an east-west direction, serves as a busy industrial trucking route between the City of Commerce and the City of Vernon. Atlantic Boulevard, which bisects the city in a north-south direction, connects the city to the 710 freeway, and the City of Bell, Cudahy, and South Gate.

The Maywood Sustainable Community Plan

Forty residents and business community leaders met for over five months to discuss their vision for Maywood. The participants identified the issues to address to achieve that vision, and how to ensure that the solutions do get implemented. The resulting document, the Maywood Sustainable Community Plan outlines the issues, strategies, resources and implementation steps developed by each committee. The committees addressed the following four topics: Economic Development, Education, Housing & Community Design, and Quality of Life & Safety. The plan is available as a “pdf” or portable file format document. Click here to download a copy in English 520kb or Spanish. 532kb
