South Gate

About the Community

South Gate is part of the Hub Cities located in the industrial area of
Los Angeles County.  The 7.5 square mile community is home to
over 96,000 residents.  In the last 30 years, South Gate has
experienced rapid cultural and economic change.   The city is in the
process of reinventing itself, from a community of middle class white
families to a diverse Latino community for the working class.  According to the 2000 Census, South Gate’s population is comprised of a 92% Hispanic.

As a community that welcomes families, South Gate is centrally located for the local workforce.  Another reason the city is attractive to families is that it offers move-up real estate housing opportunities along with a variety of recreational and cultural activities.  One of South Gate’s greatest amenities is South Gate Park, a 96-acre recreational oasis for the enjoyment of the community.  South Gate residents take pride in their city being known as the “All-American City.”

While South Gate is performing relatively better than most of its neighboring cities, it still faces the same concerns as the nearby underserved communities.  Overall, the city needs to plan for a positive transformation of its image to unite the community.

The South Gate Sustainable Community Plan

Sixty-eight residents, educators, and business leaders met over the course of four months to help create the South Gate Sustainable Community Plan.  The program involved wide participation to identify solutions addressing the concerns within the community.  Issues were discussed in the areas of education, economic development, quality of life, and housing & community design.  The main areas of concern for the residents are educational attainment levels, economic planning, city-wide maintenance, and safety.  Strategies were developed by the participants to address these concerns.  The plan is available as a “pdf” or portable file format, document.
